Officers remain at the scene
The van driver at the centre of a city centre crash which killed a three-year-old girl left the scene, the Manchester Evening News understands.
Police say the young girl died in hospital as a result of her injuries after being caught up in the collision on Mosley Street this morning (February 22).
She had been walking on the city centre street when a white Mercedes-Benz van collided with a Metrolink tram between Charlotte Street and Nicholas Street.
It’s understood the girl was hit by the van as it rebounded from the collision. Images seen by the M.E.N. show the van had mounted the pavement.
Officers are yet to locate the van driver involved in the crash, the M.E.N. understands. Enquiries into the collision are ongoing.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services are responding to reports of a collision involving a tram and a van in Manchester city centre.
“A three-year-old girl was taken to hospital and has sadly passed away from her injuries. No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.”
Tributes have poured in for the little girl who lost her life. A bunch of flowers has been left at the scene.
Detectives and Metrolink workers have been in attendance at the scene since the crash took place.
Images show the tram, which had been running from Victoria to Manchester Airport, was heading in the direction of St Peter’s Square at the time.
All trams have been suspended at St Peter’s Square since the collision, with services diverted through Exchange Square and delays reported on all Metrolink lines.
