One benefit to a team drafting college teammates? They can share some insight on one another. That’s the case for New Orleans Saints rookies Quincy Riley, a cornerback, and Tyler Shough, a quarterback who tried to get the better of him at Louisville Cardinals practice every day. When asked what kind of quarterback the Saints got in Shough during the draft’s second round, Riley didn’t mince words.

“A quarterback that is a real leader,” Riley began, via the Times-Picayune’s Luke Johnson. “The first day he got to Louisville, he made an immediate leadership impact. The throws I see him make in practice, I always say he’s the best quarterback in the draft, not being biased because he’s my teammate, but the things I see him do in practice and off the field.”

Riley added, “We’d watch film before practice with the team, but as soon as we’d get done with practice, I would see him be in there for hours watching film after practice. And it was like, ‘Oh yeah, this is the quarterback I want on my team.’ And he knows how to win games, and he brings so much swag to the team, too.”

It’s good to see former teammates stick up for each other, but Riley went the extra mile to praise Shough’s leadership qualities. He clearly feels a ton of respect for his quarterback and is eager to share the practice field with him again. But as far as who had an edge on the practice field? Riley asserts that it was him getting the better of Shough, not the other way around. We’ll see for ourselves when they both report for training camp this summer.
