Willem II are in a rotten run of form in the Eredivisie. The side, promoted from the Dutch second tier last season, lost their sixth game on the bounce on Friday evening. With just over an hour gone they were 3-0 down to SC Heerenveen before Jesse Bosch grabbed a consolation goal. This awful run of form from Peter Maes’ side means that both Almere City and RKC Waalwijk, who looked certain to be relegated just a few months ago, suddenly have hopes of survival in the Eredivisie. The two sides that occupy the automatic relegation spots are now only six points behind Willem II going into the Eredivisie weekend.
What is more concerning for Willem II is that, while the run has been six defeats in a row, they have not actually won a game in the Eredivisie since back in December. Since beating NEC Nijmigen 4-1 on the 22nd they have picked up just two points. Remarkably these came against both Feyenoord and PSV.
So what is going wrong? The side are struggling for goals, with just 29 in 28 games, the third worst in the Eredivisie. Bosch is the sides top scorer with five, while Nick Doodeman leads the team with just three assists. Despite his five goals, Bosch actually has more yellow cards (6) than goals.
Things are only set to get harder for Willem II, with Eredivisie leaders Ajax up next. They then have a run in against teams outside of the top eight, which should, on paper at least, give them a chance. They will be thankful that they do not face either of the two teams below them again this season, as that would give those sides a chance to really catch them up.
